Frequently asked questions
When is my company required to keep accounts?
Legal entities such as a GmbH (LLC) or an AG (corporation) are always required to keep accounts. Sole proprietorships and partnerships must keep double-entry accounts from an annual turnover of CHF 500,000; below that, simple records of income, expenses and assets are sufficient.
When does my company have to register for VAT?
VAT liability generally begins as soon as a company generates a worldwide annual turnover of CHF 100,000 from taxable supplies. Registration is made with the Swiss Federal Tax Administration (ESTV). Voluntary registration can make sense in certain cases; we will be happy to advise you.
How long must business records be kept?
Accounting records, receipts and business correspondence must be kept for ten years. Electronic storage is permitted, provided the documents are archived completely, legibly and in an unalterable form.
